Laughter: Sweet Therapy for Stress

by Lori

Post image for Laughter: Sweet Therapy for Stress

“The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.”
e.e. cummings

A good sense of humor can be a powerful resource in stressful times and life, as we know, comes with its share of those. Laughter can completely transform a situation because we can’t help but feel good when we’re laughing.

When I was in university, living away from home for the first time, my best friend was attending a university across town. Once a week we would get on the phone and laugh-to-tears over all the mishaps and troubles we’d endured over the past seven days. Sweet therapy! She was known for saying: “Cheer up – things could be worse. And sure enough, I cheered up and things got worse.”

Laughter: therapy for stress? Yes! Studies show that even anticipating a humorous experience can reduce stress hormones. Other studies report laughter will relax your whole body, boost your immune system and trigger the release of endorphins [feel good hormones]. This article says laughter is “one of the most healing activities in which you can engage.”

Why do we love sit coms so much; ones like Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother or The Big Bang Theory or classics like Friends or Seinfeld? My theory is that they give us a fix, albeit vicariously, of two things we badly need in life; community and laughter. Watching people we’ve come to know laugh their way though all sorts of trouble helps us to believe everything [in our lives too] really will be alright.

We need a regular dose of laughter. How do we fit that into a very busy life?  Here are some ideas:

  1. Watch a sit com – you can watch them online, therefore: any time you need one!
  2. Play with a child – children remind us how to laugh.
  3. Call a friend – the one you laugh with a lot.
  4. Get on YouTube and search for funny people like Karyn Buxman for instance, (thanks for this Bill!) who will make you laugh at your work and at yourself.

How do you keep your sense of humour when things are crazy in your life? What strikes you funny? What’s your all-time favourite (wholesome) joke? What sit coms make you laugh out loud even though no one else is in the room?

I love this!! I love laughing. My girlfriends and I have vegan dinner nights where we get together and make vegan meals for each other. We end up laughing so hard. I love it, and I look forward to them. I love when you laugh so hard that you forget what you are laughing about but you just can't seem to stop. Then when you reflect back on it you realize that it really wasn't that funny. Great article!

@Meg | One Love Meg Yes, Meg, I love that kind of fun time too! "When you realize it wasn't that funny!"

Did you watch the dancing parrot in the video just below - hilarious!

I thought of another resource for you. Did you know that April is National Humor Month? (How appropriate with tax season!) It's also International Humor Month. A friend and colleague of mine (Steve Wilson) has some suggestions for people to celebrate. The website is www.humormonth.com Hope this is helpful!

@KarynBuxmanSpeaks Thanks Karyn! I love the Laugh Poster there with the acronym for Laugh "Let's All Unite and Get Happy!" I never knew laughter was such serious business! LOL Life goes better with laughter, no doubt about it!

Lori, I adore Modern Family and like @Mark_Harai mentioned, and you agreed, 2 and 1/2 was also a favorite until Charlie took that whole life imitating fantasy thing a little too far. Total turn off. I am lucky in that I usually have my own little sit-com going in my head. I find myself quite funny 8 ) and laugh at myself throughout the day. I love to laugh and try to surround myself with folks who are funny or at least who don't take themselves too seriously. Really, that's just depressing. I've been told I'm a serious person, but I really can be very silly. We'll skype one day and you'll see! We'll bring @bdorman264 in for some major chuckles and I'm sure one of my kids might walk through for added benefit (my son just cruised through and mooned me - yikes!). See? Funny stuff here in Erica's world.

@EricaAllison That's great that you find yourself funny and that Erica's world is so entertaining! It's funny how people can perceive you differently than you feel inside. Or how we are more or less funny depending on the "audience".

I love to be around funny people too. I have one whole branch of cousins we see in the summer who are hilarious. It's fun to just sit at their table and listen to them because the humor never lets up.

We'll definitely do a Skype chat! Do I get to see the mooning child!/ @bdorman264 are you funny on Skype? (no pressure LOL)

bdorman264

@Lori @EricaAllison Yes, if you see me mooning on Skype it would be pretty funny..........oh wait, you weren't talking about me...............that would be kind of cool to see you guys in action. I like the vlogs too, but not if I have to edit anything.........just because I don't know how........but I do have techies at work that love the fact I am knee deep in the world of twitter.

I do have a post in draft talking about meeting the people you have engaged with; whether in person, skype or phone. It's one of my projects this year.........

Laughter is the only way to get through many tough patches in life. When I look back at times were I was in a dip, a sense of humor is what carried me through.

I think most of the time we take ourselves and our lives way too seriously. At the end of the day we are here for such a short period of time and in the big scheme of things it doesn't really matter. Being able to look back and take a time out, perhaps with some irony about the whole situation we are in, is definitely an important skill.

I use the word skill because although some of us are more inclined to take things lightly, I think it takes practice and like any other skill needs to be honed.

Laughing at myself is something that I have bow become very good at. My daughter actually makes it a point to remind me how ridiculous I am :)

Cheers Lori, this is a great reminder.

StaceyMJCouturier
StaceyMJCouturier like.author.displayName 1 Like

@John Falchetto It most definitely is a skill - one that we should have in school - one that is as important as (or even more important as) Math & English!!!

Lori
Lori moderator like.author.displayName 1 Like

@John Falchetto That's great that you used laughter to get through rough patches. How did you harness this skill? Thanks for calling it a skill! It IS! Unless you are naturally inclined to laugh, which not all of us are. But classifying it as a skill gives everyone hope! I used to have a calligraphy business and people would say how talented I was. Often I would make a correction - knowing how to do calligraphy is a skill, not a talent, ergo anyone can learn to do it. I'm glad to hear it is the same with laughter.

If it's a skill, there must be a way to acquire it. Any ideas @John Falchetto ? Anyone else have any ideas?

KarynBuxmanSpeaks
KarynBuxmanSpeaks like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Lori @John Falchetto Absolutely! It IS a skill and I have been teaching it for years. First step: Stop making assumption there is no humor available. Ask yourself: "what am I missing?" (if you assume nothing is funny--you'll be right. If you assume there's humor to be found--you be right!) Second step: Start raising your awareness: listen for unusual comments (overheard: "Which beach is closest to the water?"), look for unusual/funny signs, typos, etc (headline in my newspaper: "2 Pedestrians injured in rear-end collision" I can just see the 2 pedestrians colliding butt to butt!); Step 3: Manipulate your environment: Keep things available that make you smile/laugh: funny toys, knick-knacks, books (I LOVE David Sedaris and Dave Barry--I know--it dates me...), recordings: CDs, DVDs, mp3s (David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall had me laughing so hard during a root canal that I bit my dentist 3 times, but I digress), TVO your favorite funny TV shows and movies; a file of things that make you laugh, a journal of things you find funny, cartoon collections, etc; Step 4: Manipulate your mindset: practice exaggerating situations or take the other extreme: overly downplay; picture people who annoy you in their underwear; tap into pleasant/funny memories (most embarrassing moments are a great resource for this); laugh at yourself (always the safest form of humor); step 5: Take a risk: so many folks don't practice humor and fun/play for fear of looking silly. No one ever died from looking silly--there's so little to lose and so much to gain.

The bottom line: Be intentional and strategic with your humor. When humor happens by chance you gain benefits. But when it happens by choice--you get results. (and you can quote me on that!)

How's this for starters? ;)

Lori
Lori moderator like.author.displayName 1 Like

@KarynBuxmanSpeaks @John Falchetto That is fantastic for starters! It sounds like a project! I can imagine a family or group of roommates "collecting" humorous tidbits of the day and reporting back at suppertime.

I LOVE Dave Barry! His description of sanding down a "Steal" of a deal found at a yard sale only to find more paint under that paint and so on until he realized it was just one great big blob of paint. We happened to have his book "Homes and other Black Holes" when we were moving& renovating. My husband and I laughed to tears while reading it.

Hi ya Lori,

While reading this post - I got the feeling that it was written for me. That I had to read it cause it's how I deal with stress. Of course - I know if wasn't written for me alone lol but it really spoke to me Lori. I really like this piece and could relate with every point you made.

I deal with everyday stress and minor problems that aren't life threatening by laughing about them. It might sound silly to many - but when there's just nothing more I can do - when I'm trying as hard as I can to make something happen or change something - I have to laugh about it. We call it the "yellow laugh" in French sometimes. Where you could be laughing but inside not so much.

I also have a group of girlfriends who are just the funniest girls you could imagine - especially when we're all together. Hanging out with them is like therapy for the mind and soul. It really is. I could have had the worst day, with one thing piling up after the next - but once I see them - it all goes away - even if but for a few hours. Laughter is a hell of a remedy. Well, that and eating haha. When I'm stressed I eat - when I'm anxious I lose my appetite. Silly me.

The quote you used by Cummings is one I refer to often. I laugh everyday. I have to! Whether at myself, at my friends (amicably), with my friends...I laugh. And what I love even more is to make people laugh. Sometimes I turn funny naturally - other times, I can purposely act like a buffoon to put a smile on someone's face - if I think they need it. It's healthy. It's a must.

I spend my time watching series - and have watched all the ones you've listed here. As for Friends - I can pretty much recite any season you want. There is an episode of Friends running somewhere in the house at all times. The same goes for Will and Grace - which I also love and recently the Modern Family.

Laughter is an integral part of life. I have no problem laughing alone either - I often do so while watching a sit com - and out loud too :).

Anyhow - all that to say - I loved this post and the advice you had for us. I use it all the time and for the most part - it works. I really does!

Thanks for sharing this Lori.

Another wonderful read from you.

Have a lovely weekend

Cheers

@Griddy Oh Will & Grace - I'd forgotten that one - another great one! Thanks for the reminder.

I have one great friend, Marty who is a riot (though his girlfriend says that the 'fun' factor wears off having it around 24/7 hehe - - but really - I love going out with him in the group - no matter what is going on - he finds a hilarious aspect of it! And I find having him around ALWAYS ensues a great time - regardless of the weather, events or circumstances!

It's great to surround yourself with those that make us feel good, smile & laugh!

Lori
Lori moderator like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@Griddy You present laughter as a strategy - I'm just getting the power of that! So things are going not-so-good, so you laugh! What comedian said, "I LAUGH in the face of danger ha ha!"? I can't remember.

That's great that you have a group of friends who are funny. Isn't that the way we got through high school and other education institutions - with groups of friends to laugh with. You're fortunate to still have that today!

I, too, love it when someone finds me funny. I have a strange relationship with my nieces - you've met @melanieathomp , and her two sisters. For some reason, they find me funny. It started one Christmas Eve when we were all together opening presents and someone requested a pocket knife which my husband or one of my brothers-in-law usually have. They didn't. I said " What!? Christmas Eve and no knife?" They cracked up. Since then they watch me closely, waiting for me to say something "funny". Half the time I'm not even TRYING to be funny! :o

I know what you mean about Friends - it never gets old! @TashaGosselin has the whole set and I was thinking of asking her to bring them home when she comes for Easter. GUARANTEED laugh there!

And you pinpointed what I think is the most important part of laughter as stress therapy: doing it OUT LOUD! I don't know why that is so much more effective than a chuckle or a grin. Maybe it's because when you do it out loud your brain hears it, more muscles engage and your body gets the message that you're happy?

Have a great weekend Griddy!

@Lori @Griddy @TashaGosselin Oh the famous "Christmas and no knife" line! I love finding humour in things not intended to be funny! @Lori is one of the best for these! Just hang out sometime and listen for them ;) @Griddy I totally deal with stress and negative situations with humour, I can't help it! I love to see people laugh and I love hanging out with people who make me laugh too. Laughter can cure anything really @TashaGosselin I can't get enough of "Friends" oh boy... I want to join on the Easter + Friends laugh party ;) lol

@MelanieAThomp @Griddy @TashaGosselin A weekend Friends bash where you just keep watching them back to back - sure to cure any less-than-euphoric mood! I'd like to think that humor is timeless. Hey Lori,Seems as though I am very late to enter the discussion today, sorry about that it has been a busy day. This post reminded me of when I was a teenager in grade school. Me and my friends would laugh for about 4 hours/day, I am not exagurating. It was awesome, we were so happy, so relaxed and felt so good about ourselves.

This does get lost sometimes but I try to always remember that feeling and get back there. When I succeed it is as if all stress goes away.

Hey Lori, sometimes the only think I can find to laugh at it myself. A sense of humour, and the ability to take life as it comes is one of our most powerful assets. I'm not a great watcher of TV, but if I really need a laugh a quick session of "keeping up with the Kardashians" normally does it, those girls are ridiculous. The only semi normal one in the house is the dad, Buice .how he handles living with those fruitcakes is beyond me

Lori

@mylifestylemax Hey Stacey! You can laugh at yourself!? That's great! I've never watched the Kardashians. Isn't it cool how just watching something funny can change your mood? I think when you laugh you forget that you've got troubles, or maybe they become diminished with laughter. @KarynBuxmanSpeaks 's idea of watching the laughing babies is a good quick laugh too! Good thing for the Internet. Think back to the day when you had to wait until something funny came on TV at a SCHEDULED time! Now we just click click click!

JimK: Thanks for the laugh! That's a great one. As a nurse, I've heard some doozies! Like the patient who reported he'd had "Smilin' Mighty Jesus" instead of spinal meningitis, or the patient who requested a "relaxative" (didn't know if she need to relax or go to the bathroom...), or the nurse who charted, "patient fell in September and has been going downhill ever since" (I can picture the poor patient rolling down an endless hill...). People ask if these stories are really true. Trust me, you don't have to make this stuff up. Real life can be funnier than any sitcom. You just have to actively look for the humor. It's there if your antennae are up. Thanks again for the laugh!

What we woke up to the next morning was a Tropical Storm, which is one stage from a hurricane. My revised forecast for the day was strong winds, heavy rain and flash floods.
