Who Wants to Go Christmas Caroling?

by Lori

Christmas caroling - a generous activity

One of the most simple yet generous things you can do this Holiday Season to spread the Christmas cheer is gather a bunch of friends, some song books and hit the pavement (which is hopefully generously covered with snow)  caroling through your neighborhood. Have you ever gone Christmas caroling?

I was nine years old the first time I went Christmas caroling. There were seventy-five children in our neighborhood. We gathered as many as we could convince that year and commenced choosing and practicing our songs. It wasn’t a white Christmas, but there must have been flurries that night because there are snowflakes in the photo my Dad snapped at us when we showed up at our door.

I shared the story with my husband on our first Christmas together. I told him how some of the neighbors invited us in for a hot drink and others offered chocolates or cookies. When we got to my house, my mother announced that she would be observing an old tradition and she tossed pennies to us. When I got to this part of the story, my husband would always say, “Did she throw them underhand or overhand?”

That first experience gave me the Christmas Caroling bug. We caroled in High School, we caroled with the neighbors in our first neighborhood as a married couple returning to our place for hot chocolate and cookies. We bundled up the kids and brought them caroling with us. Thinking about it now makes me want to revive the tradition again this year.

Have you ever wrapped up in warm clothes and raised your voice in Christmas cheer to unsuspecting neighbors and friends? Are you doing it this Christmas?

I’m taking a break for the holidays and I want to wish you and yours a happy, healthy Christmas that is filled with laughter and many special moments! As you ring in the New Year, may your heart be filled with hope and joy! See you in 2012!

What a beautiful post Lori It just evoked all kinds of warm and fuzzy feelings...you seem to have created such lovely traditions for yourself and your family...how lucky your family is to experience the joy that you provide! And, because I am sure that they hold your stories and traditions near to their hearts, chances are that your children ( TashaGosselin and your son) will carry on the beauty of these experiences.

When I was young, I caroled on many different occasions. My earliest memory was a few of my grammar school friends going around the neighborhood singing and our gracious neighbors making us feel special ;-) In high school, I went caroling in a more organized fashion with our church youth group and, again, loved the feeling and the event. There is something so magical about most Christmas carols...they soothe me in a way that other music may not be able to. I especially love having the Classical Christmas music radio station on in the evening in the car when driving home...it is dark and peaceful and the music is reminiscent of a safe and wonderful time of the year. I just love it. In college, friends and I would take our guitars and go through the neighborhood and carol...I found that the response was not as warm as it was when we were little children doing the singing...maybe, as young adults, we weren't as "cute" and the charm just wasn't there? And actually, we sang so much better as young adults! So, I haven't caroled since college and where I live now, it probably wouldn't really work. Sigh... but, lorigosselin , if you set it up, I'm there! ;-) Especially if you provide the hot cocoa afterwards!!

Thank you for a warm and sentimental post (I apologize for getting here so late) May you and your family enjoy the time you have together this Christmas and may you all revel in the traditions that you each bring to the family!

And, finally, (whew) here is my all time favorite Christmas carol...

SocialMediaDDSTashaGosselin HI Claudia! You too have a tradition of Christmas caroling! I wish I could play guitar - that would be fun to have voices accompanied by instruments!

I want to wish you and yours a very merry Christmas! Will you be playing your guitar and singing on Christmas Eve? I'm going to imagine you doing that with your family! What a wonderful time of year! See you in the amazing 2012 just around the corner Claudia!

Every year! My former colleague hosts a fun open house every Christmas. Midway through the evening, all the tambourines and other "instruments" are brought out, pages of lyrics are distributed, and we all head out to entertain the neighborhood. So much fun! I can't sing a note, but I like to think I'm making a joyful noise!

Lori 1857 pts moderator

galenpearl Hi Galen! I like that "Make a joyful noise"! That sounds like a fun tradition! I'd want a tambourine! I wish you and yours a very merry Christmas! See you in 2012!

Hi Lori! While I can;t hold a tune, I've gone Christmas caroling countless times. I can wedge myself into the middle of a group and smile lots and sing very low. No one is wiser and I helped lift those I'm "singing" to! Every year we bring a bunch of home-made cookies and go with a group of people from church to sing carols for various widows, poor families, shut-ins and the like. They always report back how much it means to them.

May your home be filled with the warmth of family and good friends this Christmas. And may your New Year be full of amazing opportunities and success in all facets of life.

Ken Wert That's nice Ken! We never thought of bringing cookies when we went caroling! I wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and all good things in 2012. See you in January!

Ah Lori ... you make me smile HUGE with this beautiful post!! I only remember caroling twice in my life. Once at a new home, carolers stopped by (I was 8) and it was utterly magical. I was in awe and my mom I do recall, did throw pennies! The next time was when I actually participated at a hospital making the rounds to the sick. This is a beautiful tradition and one I pray always continues.

Wishing you and yours the most beautiful, memorable and worthy Christmas and New Year’s … just like you my friend!

Peace & warmth,

Elena

Sandi Amorim Hi Sandi! I've been singing them for a week now - all through my housework, baking etc. It sure keeps me in the spirit.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas! See you in 2012!

Yes, we go caroling. As a matter of fact, tonight is the chosen night. We take plates of Christmas goodies to our neighbors and sing badly for them. :) Last year we were a little late in the year and one of the neighbors told us he was worried we were ill or had other problems. We have lived here for only 6 years but have established the tradition pretty well. No one throws pennies. Ah shucks.

Have a wonderful Christmas celebration with your family.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Yvonne Root That's great Yvonne! Do you have snow where you are? How special that you've established the tradition so well! And you bring sweets!? I guess they would be waiting for you!

On one caroling occasion, we gathered our neighbors hoping to entice more to join us as we went. At one point we realized we were caroling to an empty house since its occupants were among us! ;-) A friend of ours who was late to the party just joined in with us and another friend who hadn't met him was so impressed that a "perfect stranger" had been inspired to join us. It's fun, isn't it?

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too - and fun tonight!

Lori No snow. We live in the high desert of Arizona and seldom have snow. That which we do get never lasts more than a few minutes. We do not hanker for a white Christmas. But when we want to partake of the white stuff we are only about an hour away from the Arizona mountains. If not for the grandkiddos I would be more than happy to sit out the winter in front of my fireplace thank you.

Yes, caroling is fun. We live in the boonies so really only have 4 nearby families. That works well because our youngest grandchild is only 2 and too many stops would be too much for him.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Yvonne Root Aw! That must be so nice for the grandkids Yvonne! It's nice that you can drive to the mountains to see snow and then leave it! My sister-in-law winters in Arizona and she says it's wonderful there! :-)

Yvonne Root 28 pts

Lori Yes, playing in snow is fun. Shoveling snow is not. How cool that your sister-in-law is able to take in our mild winters. We notice the snowbirds because when the temperature gets down to 50 or so we put on our heavy coats, gloves, and hats while they walk around in their short sleeved shirts. :)

Ah, what a beautiful way to express love and gratitude for the season. How invigorating it must be. Enjoy your break with family. We all have to be reminded from time to time that yes, life is lived without a laptop!

Lori 1857 pts moderator

MindAdventure So what you're saying is...you've never gone Christmas caroling Rob!?!??!? LOL It is invigorating, particularly in those moments when you're singing in front of a closed door wondering if anyone will actually open it! That's the challenge! :-)

Life without a laptop. I've done it before - I think I can do it again ;-) Just need to set my intentions for 2012 before I hang my "on vacation" sign on my ciber door and I'm officially off!

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas Rob!

Hi Lori,

I love your story and especially your husband's reaction to it. Overhanded or underhanded? ;)

I just recently went Christmas Caroling with my son's 3rd grade class to a local nursing home. We went all throughout the facility and thoroughly enjoyed it. What I loved most was my son's desire to find his 'pen pal' that he's been corresponding with (Mr. Summey lives at this particular nursing home) and the fact that my son and his little buddy carried their own tune the entire time and were quite fine with it. Those are really precious moments.

Enjoy your moments with your daughter, Lori. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you!

EricaAllison Hi Erica! Yeah - my husband has a very dry wit - I love that about him!

That's a sweet story about your son! The kids have pen pals in a nursing home! What a great idea! I've always felt that the younger generation and I include all of us in that, are missing out on the wisdom of our elders. So many older people feel they have nothing to offer when the opposite is true. We need to make more efforts to connect with the keepers of the wisdom! That's a wise teacher your son has!

I hope you have a great Christmas Erica! Are you taking some time off?

Hi Lori,

Never been caroling. With my inability to carry a tune I think of it as community service that I don't carol LOL. Have a great Christmas and we will see you after the first.

Hi Lori

Never been Christmas Caroling but I have been Mummering a Newfoundland Christmas Tradition.

How to be a Mummer

1. Dress up in ridiculous fashion to become completely disguised. Nobody should be able to guess your gender. Some fashion tips: wear a huge, grandmother’s bra outside a plaid work jacket; place a lace doily over your face; stuff the ass of your pants with fabric; carry an Ugly Stick; wear a toque.

2. Go around your community armed with accordions and other musical instruments, and knock on neighbour’s doors while shouting, “ANY MUMMERS ‘LOWED IN?” The correct way to speak like a Mummer, however, is to use an ingress of breath (i.e. speak while sucking in your breath, rather than blowing out).

3. Carry lots of alcohol.

4. Take over your host’s house, dancing jigs, playing a reel, and generally causing a ruckus.

5. Have the onlookers guess your identity.

6. Leave.

Here is a Mummering Video with a famous Newfoundland Mummering song.

Somehow I would think that this would be right up bdorman264 alley LOL

Merry Christmas

Lori 1857 pts moderator

johncharlesowens Hi John! That's hilarious - and a little terrifying if you were anywhere but Newfoundland! LOL I never heard of Mummering until now. I was saying to bdorman264 that a simple way to go Christmas caroling informally is to sing at the door of a party rather than using the doorbell. If you guys are in the Christmas spirit when you guys arrive at my place, if I have my choice, I'd vote for caroling over Mummering - just saying!

bdorman264 1935 pts

See you when you get back.

No snow in Fla, we are usually swatting mosquitoes that time of night......:).

I used to go caroling in my younger days, but they made me stop. They said it was taking them out of the Christmas spirit.

Our office did it a nursing home a few years ago; they must have asked us to leave as well because we haven't been back.

It is a neat tradition; I'm up for seeing it revived.

Merry Christmas!

Lori 1857 pts moderator

bdorman264 Hi Bill! You're swatting mosquitoes in December? Do you ever get a break from that then?

Aw - your Christmas caroling took Christmas spirit AWAY!? Maybe check out what johncharlesowens mentioned might be up your alley above? Or try lip syncing. It's the being there, being a part of it that's so much fun. And it could be informal, for instance, when arriving at a party sing rather than use the doorbell! Hmmm.... :-)

Al Smith 301 pts

Hi Lori. Bill was probably dressed inappropriately, flirting with all the old ladies at the nursing home, not to mention his lack of carrying a tune. Ha.

You are such a kind and thoughtful person. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thanks for all you do. Enjoy your time off with family and friends.

DeliberateBlog 107 pts

LoriAl Smithkaarina dillaboughthejackbliveurlovesocialmediadds I've never been caroling. I'm not sure how I'd feel about strangers inviting me in for hot toddies. Has no one ever heard of roofies? I think I'd be unable to get those twilight zone type scenarios out of my head, where the unsuspecting stranger takes advantage of a nice older couple's hospitality only to end up being served as dinner (as in, SHE's the dinner). LOL. This is what you get when you live in cities all your life, I guess. Inviting strangers into your house to get them drunk isn't seen in a different light around here.

Pantsless caroling must be a Florida thing. Can't imagine doing that in a cold country. Bill would've frozen his jinglebells off... :oD

Hugs to all and to all a good night!
