2012: The End of the World?

by Lori

2012 - a foreboding portrait

I thought long and hard before publishing this post as I like to keep things relatively positive here but we can’t gather to talk about life and pretend there aren’t a few doomsday theories floating around concerning the year 2012. I checked Google AdWords for the words “2012 end of the world” and there were 550,000 global searches in the past 30 days. Seems it’s a topic we need to discuss.

So I did a Google search on the words of the title. These are the 5 top sites I found. (I skipped the “images” link- if the world is going to end, I don’t want to see it!):

1) Theend.com says this is it. Mark your calendar because according to this site the end is near.

2) Wikipedia presents both the eschatological and the New Age ideas. It seems cataclysmic events will occur later this year or a solar maximum or a black hole or an asteroid will do us in or it’s a time of “positive physical or spiritual transformation” .

3) The National Geographic site debunks the six end of the world myths.

4) Nasa’s site too debunks the myths and sheds scientific light on them. Nothing to worry about folks!

5) If you’re inclined to worry, however, you might enjoy the end of the world2012 site. But wait! At the bottom of the page they conclude that the end of the world is not on the calendar for this year. But we’re still all going to die – sometime – as usual.

I think there is a little piece of us that worries and it’s not really a piece of us at all, but a fear we’ve inherited. We have descended from people who went through World Wars and the fear of the cold war. I was just a child when they were building bomb shelters in the sixties and my mother worried because she had three small children and two hands. I was a young adult when the movie “The Day After” aired on TV. My baby was just six months old the year the Berlin wall came down, and eleven years later we waited out a precarious New Years Eve together to see what would happen as the year 2000 dawned. I’ve had it with the worry. But I understand where it comes from.

If you’d like clear look at the doomsday theories, watch this CBC documentary. Doc Zone (Note the resemblance? Anne Marie MacDonald, the host of the show, is my first cousin!)

What do you think about all this? Is 2012 the end of the world? Are you worried? What are your thoughts?

I think that the world deserves a positive end of the world! :) Imagine everyone in the world turned their lawns into edible forrest gardens. That would solve the problems of disease, global warming and hunger in one shot! I have found a website that holds this view -

All of the worlds problems can be solved in a garden. Check out Permaculture.

Hi Art,

It's interesting, isn't it, how much time we put into caring for our lawns when we could be growing food on all that land! There's nothing like home-grown food, either.

I'll check out the link, thanks! Welcome to Life, for instance!

Lori, great topic. And coincidentally enough, the Buffalo advertising community has gone from jingles to tingles. Be sure to check out @ADDYGEDDON on Twitter, or visit ultimatedeadline.com. We may not be able to stop the end of the world. But we can sure make some jokes about it.

So far, I've been very nervous when I hear talks of the world ending. I decided to to purchase Survive 2012. I can finally rest easy at night! http://doiop.com/SurviveApocalypse

StayPostedUp The survival guide seems filled with basic survival skills which we've lost in our time. It would probably be a good thing for people to have these skills, but I'm not worried, as the author is, that we're in for trouble. The information I've collected (links in the post) debunks these fears as myths. The people gathering here seem to be of the same mind: that all is will and all will be well.

I remember that movie, back in the 80's I think, called The Seventh Sign (with Demi Moore). Stellar movie it was not, but I do remember being chilled by the idea that we won't necessarily notice Biblical signs that we are near the end because they may not look like we expect or we just aren't paying attention.

Regardless, I agree with the sentiments stated here that it's not worth worrying about - if it happens (in whatever form it takes), I have absolutely no control over it, so my time is best spent living each moment to the fullest, doing the things that make me happy, and spending time with friends and family. As a recovering worrier, I feel much freedom in that.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

HerSparkle Hi Lisa! It's not funny how those movies can get stuck in our minds. "The Day After" haunted me for a long time. I like how you refer to yourself as a "recovering worrier". I'm glad I missed "The Seventh Sign"! By now we have gotten through a few end-of-the-world threats. This will be no different. All will be well!

Worrying does nothing. It adds no value to my life; in fact, it does just the opposite. It's futile to worry about what will be (I'm going to have "Que Sera, Sera" stuck in my head again. I can tell.) or the what if's. It's better to focus on today and what I can accomplish in it. Now to put into practice what I've just said...

Erin F. 670 pts

I realized I went on a tangent about worry itself. Sorry! Am I worried about the end of the world? Not particularly.

Hi Lori,

I remember when that movie "The Day After" aired on TV. The image of the mushroom cloud is still embedded into my subconscious.

My take on 2012 is that it is not the end of the World, just the end of an age or a way of life. Things will get worse before they get better, but in the end the World will be a much better place to live.

My latest conversation: How to Grow a Positive Mindset

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Justin Mazza You remember that movie too?! There was such hype about it at the time and the cold war was still going on. I wished later that I hadn't watched it because the images stuck in my mind too.

It's funny how we talk about the future as if we can know what's going to happen. At best we can know that [according to quantum mechanics] every possibility will be played out. Which one do we want to choose to focus on? I'll choose the happy scenario! A better world? Okay, sounds good to me!

Lori, wait to get the pot stirring! It's NEVER a bad traffic idea to start blogging about the end of the world! Ha ha. In fact, wait, let me start writing one! :) Just kidding, I'll start writing doomsday posts in September. Give everyone a good 3 months. :)

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Bryan Thompson So you're not going to tell us what you think - until SEPTEMBER :o

I thought I'd do it now because it kind of sneaks into my thoughts every time I write THE DATE! LOL So I thought we'd get it over with. But nobody here is worried. The general consensus here seems to be we have nothing to worry about and even things to look forward to! That's good :-)

JimK 109 pts

Hi Lori. I for one am not worried in the least. Without going into much research, it is safe to state that there have been a number of "end of the world" predictions in the last fifty years. Just this week alone I have seen one more prediction. Scientific research has said that the world will end in 500 million years as this is when they predict the end of the sun. That is assuming that man does not blow the world up first. Some say that the world's going to end on 21st December 2012 because that's when the Mayan calendar ends. I don't think anyone needs to worry about it. The world is not going to end until Jesus comes down to earth again.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

JimK 500 million years? How many zeros is that? I think we're good then Jim ;-)

JimK 109 pts

Lori we'll be pretty old by then. :-)

I figure when the end of the world comes I'll be done whether or not I'm ready, so why worry about it? Having been on a news diet for many years (no TV, no newspapers) I avoid the worry quite well!

My father worries enough for both of us as he watches 3 different versions of the news hour on TV and read the paper cover to cover. If there's anything going on that I absolutely need to know about, I know my dad has me covered ;-)

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Sandi Amorim Hi Sandi! I know what you mean by the new diet! My husband watches enough for the both of us. It's funny, but that's how they say it, isn't it ' if the world is going to end, someone will tell me. Yet, someone is telling us now and, well, we're not listening ;-) A news diet and a worry diet are nearly synonymous these days!

Sandi Amorim 214 pts

Lori I tried to explain to my dad (who has scary high blood pressure) that watching the news only aggravates him. Plus, he's slightly embarrassed by his clueless daughter ;-)

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Sandi Amorim Yeah, I get that. Sometimes I think I should pay more attention to the news. If I didn't have my husband balancing that for us, I'd have to pay attention. I don't want to be clueless! ;-0

DeliberateBlog 107 pts

Hey Lori. Well, since you asked... ;oP I've actually read a bunch about this subject and even wrote a post about it last year. In a nutshell - the Mayans were pretty great at predicting energy patterns, so let's assume for a moment that their calendar has merit (I believe it does, at least a bit). We can't seem to agree on what math they used to calculate the "end date", so this could very well be next year (the research that I most resonated with) or even in thirty years. It doesn't matter. Because the "end" of the calendar doesn't signify the end of the world. Good Gawd. Why do people always have to be so fatalistic?? It simply means a bit change, one that's so massive that the Mayans could not see beyond it. And guess what, doomsdayers? We are already in the midst of that change. Time is speeding up, people are waking up, stuff is going down, y'all. This is it. You can worry about it and focus on what you don't like about it and be miserable, or you can enjoy the ride. Guess what I'm doing? Weeeeeeeee! :o)

Hugs!!

DeliberateBlog I was going to say this exact same thing (the end of the calendar isn't the end of the world). Actually, NASA said that for both of us. The Mayan calendar just ends its current cycle. Just like our calendar ends its cycles every December 31. :)

Ken Wert 95 pts

HI Lori!

Such an interesting topic. So let's see, do I believe that ancient peoples had the ability to see millennia into the future and predict some cataclysmic event that would end life or end it as we know it? In a word, nope.

Now it gets tricky because i do believe Biblical predictions. However, there is no date associated with any Biblical understanding, only signs of the times. So am I gearing up for the end? Only in the sense that I want to be the best person I can be at all times. Do I believe it will be 2012? Again, nope.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

Ken Wert I agree Ken. And if I'm wrong we're both wrong and there won't be anyone here to say I told you so! ;-)

johncharlesowens 159 pts

Hi Lori

End time prophecies. If you read Mark chapter 13 in the new Testament you will get a better understanding of why Christians can be obsessed with end times.

Obviously as a humane being we know that their will be an end to our current form and we know that some day our galaxy will come to an end.

Every human being has to answer the question how do I feel about the end of this my form.

Lots of people in the west totally ignore this question until the end of their life or the end of the life of a loved one. So I think that thinking about the end is part of being a conscious human being.

Now back to end times prophecies. If you read what Jesus said in Mark 13 he talks about all the false end time prophecies about the end of the world and his return. He even goes so far as to say that no one knows when the end will come not the angels not even him only God the fathers knows. I think the only sign the he gives that is a sure bet is the Sun will go dark and the stars will fall out of the sky. Kind of a no brainer sign that the jig is up.

At the end of this chapter he says that we should live our life deliberately in the present weighing each action as if it where our last. In other words, is this action what I want to go out of this world doing. As a christian you sign up for a personal relationship in which you are expecting that the holy ghost, the helper, the paraclete will lead the way if you are willing to ask and believe that the thoughts and feelings that are motivating you to act are cumming from him ultimately. In this chapter in Mark 13 he is reminding his followers that the only way to here from him is in the present. He says Watch for me continually in other words a 365 24/7 relationship because you do not know when he is coming and the only way you will ever see him now and when he comes is if you are in the present following the holly ghost. ( Bit radical I know)

A certain sect of Christians is obsessing over end time signs, my personal belief is that it is a complete wast of time sort of like being addicted to watching tv. It keeps people distracted instead of going out and doing something productive. We are suppose to be diligently out in the world working not hunkering down in bunkers.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

johncharlesowens Thanks John! No need to watch and wait for signs. When the sun goes out and the stars fall, we'll pretty much know for sure what's going on.

If anything, 2012 will be a year when people pay attention to the moment, the present itself. That can only be a good thing.

Thanks for going into such detail. I appreciate the time you take in your comments here, especially since I suspect you do it on your (tiny) phone keypad! :-) HOW do people type with their thumbs! :o

Hi Lori, What an intriguing post! I kind of hate talking about the end of the world...I don't do well with death...but that's another story ;-) I am quite pollyannish when it comes to life...a bit unrealistic and an eternal optimist. I think I have nurtured that part of me to combat my fears of death. That said, I really don't put much credence in the end of the world theories but I DO believe mankind is doing a really awesome job (meant facetiously) of wrecking our planet environmentally and politically (wars). I'm pretty sure that if there is any "end of the world" stuff going on, it will be done by our own hands....and this makes me very sad.

Claudia

Lori 1857 pts moderator

SocialMediaDDS Hi Claudia, I'm a fellow pollyanna, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I don't believe the world will come to an end this year. I think it will be an exciting, high-energy year. It's starting out this way anyway! I think our awareness of what's happening to the planet has to result in some positive changes. Awareness precedes change. So there is a lot to feel hopeful about!

Sorry, I have an appointment on that day and it is one I have been trying to get for sometime so it looks like 'they' will have to reschedule. However, just to hedge my bets, I still devour and enjoy each meal like it's my last..........just in case...........:).

This doomsday proposition is based on the Mayan Calendar I believe and people ask, 'well, what happened to them and where are they now'. Food for thought and call my crazy if you wish, but have you seen the documentary's about the pyramids and the symbols carved on mountaintops that can only be seen from the sky that was done before I was even born? Knowing how civilization has 'evolved' from primitive to educated, I don't think there is any possible way any of that could have been done to the precision it was without assistance from somewhere. These stories in the Bible about gods descending from the heavens, could it have been something else it was hard for the uneducated mind to grasp?

I know, crazy talk but even the experts today can't duplicate what was done back then to the same precision.

My point is, maybe there is some validity to what the Mayans had to say..........just sayin'.........

My other point is, 'so what'? I have attended more funerals in the past year than I think I have in total prior to this year and certainly don't hope it's a trend. I do know life is short and try to live it to the fullest and enjoy the journey while I'm are here; no matter how little or long that may be.

Ok, if my community starts leaving me in droves I will know why; but until someone can convince me otherwise, I stand firm in not believing we had the knowledge and technology at that time to perform those feats.

Lori 1857 pts moderator

bdorman264 I like this Bill - a logical approach . (That and the fact that you have a appointment then and the world can't end without you ;-) What I find makes it hard to believe this whole thing is that the modern Mayans don't. You'd think if it was that important, some of that knowledge would have been carried on.

Well, if you have an appointment that day, they'll have to put it off until another year. ;-)

I find it very depressing that world is going to end at the time I finish repaying my car loan ;). I find no reason to worry. Even if it happens , we were going to die someday anyway. Just that the time came earlier than expected.

I checked with Mayans . They told me to buy new car ;)

Lori 1857 pts moderator

blogaks LOL Ashvini - it's true that the modern Mayans don't say the world is going to end. How do these things get so out of hand? I know not everyone is laughing about this. That's why I wanted to discuss it here. :-)

I am not sure :). I do respect feelings of people who have their own set of beliefs even though I do not agree with them. All of us can only wait till the time it happens. Only then the truth will be out.
