What is Your Superpower?

by Sandi Amorim

Sandi and I talked about superhero powers a while back and both thought it would make a great topic of conversation! She and her friend Cigdem Kobu have just launched something exciting too: Reset. Revive. Restart. a 28 day Boost Camp. Sandi blogs regularly at DevaCoaching.com

“Superman’s greatest contribution has never been the superhero part:
it’s the Clark Kent part – the idea that any of us,

in all our ordinariness, can change the world.”
- Brad Meltzer

Usually, when the topic of superpowers arises people think of powers like flying, invisibility, or some super-human strength. But what if your true superpower is real and much more practical? Do you know what your super (and sometimes secret) power is?

Your power is secret and/or hidden because you take it for granted. You’ve not noticed because it’s so every-day-normal to you. But if it’s secret or hidden, how do you know it’s your super power? Realize it’s hidden from your view, not from everyone else’s view.

Consider the following:

1. What do people thank you for?

Often overlooked, the answer to this question offers lots of information, ie: I often hear that my superpower is how I listen. Seriously? Listening as a superpower??? For years, I discounted it because I wanted a sexier, more dramatic power (or at the very least cool accessories like Wonder Woman!)

But listening comes up over and over; I’ve learned to own and appreciate it. I hear what’s not being said, the tiniest pause, a quiet catch of the breath – all cues that help me help others with more impact.

You’ve got your thing that people thank you for, which you minimize because it’s no big deal – to you. But it is a big deal and it makes a difference for others. Give up the self-deprecation and own your power.

2. What’s comes easily to you?

What do you do as naturally as breathing, and how does it positively impact your life and the people around you?

You’ve got to check this out with others because your own thoughts about it are not reliable. Others may have similar powers, but how you use them is unique to you. The smoke and mirrors of the Internet do not a superpower make. Walkin’ the talk however, shines the light on the heroes in our midst.

 3. What’s your most natural form of expression?

Here’s a hint…it’s related to your values. For example, laughter and fun have got to be present for me or I’m not interested. Along with my listening, people often say they hear my laugh encouraging them to lighten up. I say that’s definitely using my power for good.

What is it for you? Is it the way you write, encourage, inspire? Maybe your peaceful way of being and your sense of calm. The world needs your superpower, do you know what it is?

My super power is being able to listen/understand without showing of my super powers. I'm able to speak to people in their own language.

I have this gift from my dad who was a prosecutor and had to interogate people and find the guilty person.

He was saying: you can't interogate a killer using an ethical behavior and  diplomatic language. Earn a killers trust by using a brutal language, look directly in his eyes, be tough and don't smile. With your friends and family you have to be kind, lovely and genle.

This example may sound creepy, but this is a real world example.

@Ion Doaga Hi Ion, I think it's called matching and mirroring; speaking the language, as you say,  of the person, a superpower indeed ;-) I've learned it's also called being highly self monitoring in psychological terms. Interesting stuff!!

@Lori  @Ion Doaga It is indeed a superpower that can seem creepy in some circumstances! As Lori said, it's about monitoring or managing the power. Like a firehose that can cause damage if we lose control, but save the day when used wisely and with skill!

My superpower is teaching.  That seems to be what is always reflected back to me from others.  Like you, laughter and fun have to be part of it.  People are surprised by that when they find out that I taught Contract Law and Contract Drafting.  You'd be surprised how much fun contracts can be!

@galenpearl It is most definitely a superpower to bring fun and laughter to anything you do, and such a gift to others! Has it always been with you Galen?

@Sandi Amorim No, not at all.  Fun is something that came to me later in life, and largely through teaching.  I realized that if I wasn't having a good time, my students wouldn't either, so I started thinking about what made the topic fun.  Once I got the concept, it started spilling over into other areas of my life.

@galenpearl You must be a good teacher to make contract law and contract drafting fun Galen! I think teaching is something you can't learn but something that comes naturally. You've got to love it and of course you do - your blog attests to that!

I LOVE this question, and I think I answer it differently each time it's posed.  Today I'm thinking my superpower is my ability to inspire people to believe in themselves and their dreams.

@Carol Hess A different superpower every day Carol! What a great idea! Imagine choosing a different one each day and living it out that day!

I love that idea, Lori -- a superpower every day.  You don't think it might make us somewhat schizophrenic super sheroes? (Ya gotta love all that alliteration!)

@Carol Hess Schizophrenic super sheroes? It might but what the heck, let's do it anyway ;-)

That's a good question, Sandi, to which I'm not sure I have an answer.  I'll have to think about it more, but right now I believe my superpower has most inspired my own dreams by creating an opportunity for me to walk my talk and really go for what I want for myself.  Also, identifying my superpower(s) has helped me clarify my life purpose.

Hi Sandi

My super power is definitely love but like Clark Kent I had to let go of my identity to step into my super power. But since my identity was a false one like Clark Kent I was glad to be free from it. I now have the ability to break the hardest rocks, to calm the biggest storms and to walk in perpetual light . I could not begin to tell you about all the abilities that come with this supernatural power all I can say is love is worth any price.

@Sandi Amorim  It has set me free from the fears that generated the false self in the first place. Fear is the natural emotion to the loss of relationship the world teaches us all the ways that we can lose relationship and when we believe them they come true and so we are bound by fear until love comes and tells us by loving us  that nothing can separate us from Gods love for us and once we are free we become that love that loves others out of their fears.

johncharlesowens
johncharlesowens

@Sandi Amorim Yes we are free indeed to make the choice. Fear can not tell the truth about anything and would dearly love for us to believe that we do not have a choice.

@johncharlesowens Hmm, this reminds me of one of my favourite questions from Conversations with God, "What would love do now?" We're always coming from love or fear, and taking a moment to breathe and ask the question helps us remember we have a choice.

Ooooh, tough one, Sandy.

You may not like my answer but my superpower is challenging folks. I challenge most things. It comes from my youth. Like most young folks I was a rebel and that has stuck with me though my life. I rarely accept opinion or ideas at rote. Sometimes is pisses people off but in most cases people come back to me because they like the fact that I make them think.

Is that a superpower or am I just a super pain in the butt?

@rdopping Not like it? I love  this superpower and think it makes such a big difference in the world! We could call you The Challenger :)

Kidding aside, your superpower is a great asset in the work I do as a coach. What have you noticed in your life about this power?

Sandi, you are one of those super-sheroes with too many superpowers to count!

Mine has got to be the way I can find the love and light in just about any situation...it's a magical little trick I've always tapped into, and I've been given MANY opportunities to strengthen it over the years and through my coaching practice!

I can't tell you my superpower or my enemies will use it to hurt my friends and that would make me very sad and very angry. And believe me, you wouldn't like me when I angry.

Hi Sandi!

Superpower? Me? Some people thank me for being in a good mood and spreading happiness, people who know me better will ask "How are you really feeling?".

I would love to have the SP to stay calm and not be given to panic attacks.

@Sandi Amorim and like the diamond necklace many of us don't recognize our own "superpowers" do we? Maybe we need to ask a trusted friend or close family member to tell us what they see?

Sandi Amorim
Sandi Amorim

@Lori That is something I do periodically; if I'm feeling down or going through a transition. I use the three questions above in an email to a few key people in my life. I always learn something new about myself and it gets me out of my head! Would you try something like that?

Latest blog post: Following the Shero’s Path

Lori

@Sandi Amorim I might try that at some time. I'd have to think about who I'd send the questions to. Interesting to think about!

BetsyKCross

I think my SP is automatic conection. I've felt it with people since I was little. Seeing and feeling people as individuals, and really only experiencing the best of them is natural for me. But, huge but, I always see the "bad", but let it prove itself out over time, ignoring it in the beginning. That has gotten me into sticky corners! LOL!

Sandi Amorim
Sandi Amorim

@BetsyKCross That is an awesome power Betsy! Reminds me of a course I took years ago that had us consider what it would be like to come from the perspective that we are all already connected. That would change the world, wouldn't it?

Hi Sandi,

I'll have to give this some more thought because I don't know what my superpower is, but I know a few I'd like to have!  I'd like to have the superpower of patience and acceptance.I'd like the superpower of calm in all situations. For starters ;-)

Lori

Sandi Amorim

@Lori I think I gasped out loud when I first heard Brene Brown say "Calm is a superpower." What??? My mind could not compute! But it is, just like so many ways of being we minimize or discount.

Just imagine a world where calm saved the day. Can you imagine the difference that would make?
