Who’s Got Your Back?

Who’s Got Your Back?

Who supports you no matter what’s going on in your life?  We need to know there is someone there to support us, to be there when things don’t go well.  Who’s got your back?

I’m in a beautiful and unique place in my life.  I have my husband, father and children with me – and they’ve all got my back!

My husband has my back in so many ways.  He has from the start.  Sometimes he is there before I even know I need him.  He knows, though.  After more than twenty-five years together, we seem to be intuitively connected.  What an amazing feeling this is!

My father has my back, supporting me in everything I do.  I remember when Mom and Dad used to take us all out for breakfast on Sunday mornings.  Sitting at one end of the large table Dad would ask each one of us in turn about what we were doing these days.  You could feel everyone’s energy soar under his focused attention as he inquired about our lives.  He always knows how to let us know he has our backs.

Even though my children are both away at university, they too have my back.  My daughter keeps an eye on LFI and gets into the conversation when she can.  This is not easy for her since she’s industriously working on her PhD.  I feel blessed to have this unique connection with her across the miles through a web blog.

My son is completing his last year of Engineering yet he too keeps an eye on things around here.  When he was fourteen he made the web site for Terra Cotta Pendants.  By the time he’d graduated from High School, we had spent many hours working on this business together.  Today, no matter how busy he is, he makes himself available when I have a problem with TCP, sometimes (like his father) recognizing the problem and contacting me before I am even aware of it.

Many other people have my back too; siblings, friends, neighbours, coach; you.  Knowing there are people who have your back is the feeling of belonging to a community.  It’s part of the reason I love community so much.  I believe it’s why we all long for it if we find ourselves without it for too long.  Belonging to a community gives us something we all need: the feeling that we are not alone.

Who gives you that feeling that no matter what happens, they’ll be there for you and you’ll work it all out together?  Who’s got your back?
