Living in Community

Living in Community

“Where everybody knows your name;
and they’re always glad you came.”
– Theme song from Cheers

What I Mean by “Living in Community”

I’m not talking about the geographical application of the word “community”, as in to live in a city or town, or village.

When I say community, I’m referring to a rare and beautiful state of connection among the members of a group.

Living in community means having authentic conversations and solving problems together.  It means enjoying get-togethers for potlucks, games nights, “Coffee and Conversation” evenings and more.

Living in community means having people around you who you know you can count on, people who care about you, and with whom you feel safe to be yourself.

A community is a place where you feel you belong.

Culture Shock

Moving from a small town in the Maritimes to a large city in Ontario would have been culture shock enough, but I was also moving into an apartment where I’d be living alone for the first time in my life.  From this perspective, I came to recognize a real need for community development in apartment buildings.  The experience of living here was the inspiration for the creation of a Kalliergo community-building program that addresses the current crises of loneliness, depression, and addiction in our society, specifically, in the place where many people may feel as if they live “apart”.

Community Development for Apartment Living

Apartment owners and managers are aware of the importance of community.  This is why they host social events for their tenants.  But event planning is only a small part of what it takes to build community.

Apartment buildings are also workplaces, and managers know that in the workplace, community is important.  This is why they arrange team-building activities for their staff.  But there is a more effective method of organizational management now, and Kalliergo Community Building is at the forefront of this new field.

This comprehensive program not only creates a happier living environment for tenants but also creates a happier workplace for management and staff.
