What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?
I think you need to know who you are before you can know what you want to do in life. When I was in my first year of university my aunt used to caution me not to be in a hurry to become committed to my first (serious) boyfriend. “You’re still growing,” she’d remind me, “You don’t know yet who you’re going to be.” She was right.
I’m fickle; I can accept that about myself now. I’m halfway between my fourth and fifth career and I feel more alive than I’ve ever felt before. How can things change so dramatically, so completely that the source of your joy one year is replaced by something entirely new the next? Things can change whenever we want them to; we change them with our will.
I’m not big fan of having Goals. I prefer Intentions or Dreams or just Things I Want. I don’t think you ever get old or “stuck” in life as long as there is something on your list, no matter what you call it. That list has to be topped up regularly too, perhaps even daily.
We think that by the time we reach adulthood everything is “done”. Far from it! Thank goodness for that! It isn’t only the ages of childhood that give us license to dream and plan! We can do it all life long and, again, good thing for that. Because I’m still working out what I want to be when I grow up.
Do you know? What do you want to be when you grow up?
