Do You Believe in Destiny?

Do You Believe in Destiny?

We’ve talked about happily ever after and now it’s time to talk about the mechanism which led you to one another. Do you believe in destiny?

I love hearing stories about how couples meet. My family history is filled with wonderful stories! My grandparents eloped when she was thirteen and my grandfather was eighteen. Her uncle and father chased them on horseback to the church where the young couple had barred the door until the ceremony was complete. Yep – it’s all true!

My parent’s meeting seems anything but chance. There were a string of serendipitous events which caused them to meet that day.

My story of how I met my husband of twenty-seven years, too, is rife with serendipity.

I had intended to stay in that night. I had just broken up with a boyfriend and I wanted to cocoon at home. That was when my friend called asking me to go out with her. I didn’t want to go out but she was hurting too from a recent breakup – with my brother – and she was a good friend. I really had no choice.

I agreed to go to a movie with her – a funny movie – and then come straight home. But after laughing through the movie we both felt a little better so we decided to go for coffee before going home. Coffee morphed into a drink and for the drink we gravitated to a bar across the street from our favourite dance club.

After the drink, we decided to cross the street and take a walk through the club agreeing that if we didn’t see anyone we knew we would leave.

The club was packed. We had walked through the basement level and were mounting the stairs single file. I was in the lead. I planned to go straight, skirt the dance floor on two sides and go down to the hall to the exit. Except that as I reached the top of the stairs I heard a voice in my head that said, “Go this way,” indicating a left turn. I heeded the voice without hesitation. As I rounded the corner behind the DJ’s booth I saw him and he saw me.

I wasn’t “supposed” to be at the club that night. I had planned to be relaxing at home. But it seemed I had an appointment with destiny and the rest, as they say, is history.

Do you believe in destiny? Where there serendipitous events which led to your meeting with your partner? What’s your story?
